The Helsinki Committee for Human Rights – Skopje, in partnership with the LGBTQ+ Victory Institute and the Margini Coalition, invites the next generation of LGBTIQ+ leaders. If you are ready to make a real change, stand up for the community, and build the future of the movement—this is your chance.
What is this school?
We are looking for 15 determined young individuals eager for change, aged 18-30, from across North Macedonia to join this school. Through four dynamic modules, you will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to make a change and shape the future of the LGBTIQ+ movement.
You will learn how to:
- Understand and navigate systems of power! – Familiarize yourself with how the state operates and how you can exert influence within it.
- Be loud and be heard! – Develop public speaking skills and campaign creation to amplify your voice and change opinions.
- Stay safe, be strong! – Learn how to protect yourself and the community while advocating for change.
- Create a pathway for advocacy! – Explore how to connect with decision-makers and institutions to ensure the community’s voice is heard.
This is also an opportunity to connect with other young leaders from across the country, build networks, and work together to advance the movement.
Program Details
The training will take place at the Committee, a socio-cultural center in Skopje. Each module lasts two days with 6 hours of interactive learning per day. Here’s the schedule:
- Module 1: Advocacy and State Structure – November 9-10
In this module, participants will embark on a journey to understand the essential elements of advocacy in the context of LGBTIQ+ rights. The training will begin with an introduction to the program’s goals, laying the groundwork for engaged exploration of how advocacy intersects with state structures. Participants will explore the importance of LGBTIQ+ inclusion, learning about the crucial role of NGOs in North Macedonia. The history of the LGBTIQ+ movement will be examined to highlight past struggles and victories. Additionally, the module will review the political system and landscape, focusing on the roles of political parties and public policies, equipping participants with the knowledge needed for effective advocacy for inclusive policies.
- Module 2: Communications – November 23-24
The communications module aims to train participants in essential skills for effective advocacy through various communication strategies. The training will begin with an overview of public advocacy, emphasizing the role of spokespersons in LGBTIQ+ activism. Participants will explore media strategies and digital campaigns, understanding how to create messages that resonate with different target groups. The focus will shift to using social media as a powerful tool for political communication, highlighting best practices for engaging supporters and raising awareness. Through interactive sessions and group activities, participants will develop practical skills for crafting impactful communication strategies tailored to their advocacy goals.
- Module 3: Safety – December 7-8
In the safety module, participants will confront the realities and challenges faced by LGBTIQ+ individuals and activists. The training will begin with an exploration of international protection mechanisms, providing participants insight into the legal frameworks that safeguard LGBTIQ+ rights. The module will address the risks and difficulties faced by LGBTIQ+ candidates and elected officials, prompting discussions around self-care strategies and mental health. Participants will engage in group discussions to share experiences and coping mechanisms, creating a supportive environment. By the end of this module, participants will have a comprehensive understanding of safety issues in advocacy and practical strategies to protect themselves and their communities.
- Module 4: Electoral Processes – December 21-22
The final module will focus on electoral processes, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of political campaigns. The training will begin with an overview of the structure and management of electoral campaigns, covering key aspects such as campaign strategy, regulations, and messaging. Participants will gain insight into the daily operations during campaigns, including budgeting and resource allocation. Additionally, the module will include training in public management and effective body language, enhancing participants’ presentation and communication skills. The module will conclude with a networking session, where participants will share ideas for establishing a network of LGBTIQ+ leaders, affirming the importance of collaboration in advancing LGBTIQ+ rights.

We strongly encourage applications from lesbians and bisexual women, gay and bisexual men, transgender and intersex individuals, ethnic minorities, people living with HIV, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups within the LGBTIQ+ community.
What is covered?
We will cover the costs of travel, accommodation, meals, and training materials—everything you need to do is be ready to learn and join us.
